"Yamaraja" Hosts Long Jump Competition on Pothole-Ridden Road to Highlight Infrastructure Issues in Karnataka

A video featuring a long jump competition conducted by a mace-wielding ‘Yamaraja,’ the God of Death, has taken social media by storm. The unconventional protest took place on a pothole-ridden road in Udupi, Karnataka, and aims to draw attention to the dire state of the region’s infrastructure.

The video, set against the backdrop of the Adi Udupi-Malpe road—which connects Udupi to the popular Malpe Beach—shows ‘Yamaraja’ in traditional golden attire, measuring the jumps of men dressed as ghosts. The road, visibly filled with potholes, served as the competition ground. Assisting ‘Yamaraja’ was another participant dressed as ‘Chitragupta,’ the Hindu deity who records the deeds of the dead.

The creative demonstration was organized to spotlight the poor road conditions and the challenges faced by local residents due to the numerous potholes. The dramatic approach is part of a broader trend of using eye-catching methods to protest and call for infrastructure improvements.

Earlier this year, a similar protest occurred in Hyderabad, where a woman sat in a pothole filled with muddy water to highlight the dangerous road conditions. She claimed that her children had been injured due to potholes, specifically on the stretch between Nagole and Uppal, which she noted had as many as 30 potholes.

The Udupi protest underscores the urgent need for road repairs and improved infrastructure. As social media buzzes with reactions to the video, it remains to be seen how authorities will respond to the mounting public pressure to address the pothole issue and enhance road safety.
