A 5.1 magnitude earthquake struck the Bay of Bengal in the early hours of Tuesday, as per the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The tremor was recorded at 6:10 AM IST at a depth of 91 kilometers beneath the ocean surface.
The NCS shared details of the seismic activity on X (formerly Twitter), stating:
“EQ of M: 5.1, On: 25/02/2025 06:10:25 IST, Lat: 19.52 N, Long: 88.55 E, Depth: 91 Km, Location: Bay of Bengal.”
There have been no immediate reports of damage or casualties from the earthquake. Given its offshore location and significant depth, the tremor was unlikely to have caused significant impact on coastal areas. However, authorities continue to monitor the situation for any aftershocks or secondary effects.
The Bay of Bengal region occasionally experiences seismic activity due to its proximity to tectonic plate boundaries. Experts advise that coastal communities remain prepared for potential tremors and follow safety guidelines issued by disaster management authorities.
