30 Dead, Over 7.5 Crore Devotees at Maha Kumbh as Tragedy Strikes with Stampede on Mauni Amavasya

A devastating stampede at the Maha Kumbh on Mauni Amavasya claimed 30 lives and left 60 injured, as millions of pilgrims gathered in the holy city of Prayagraj for the revered occasion. The tragic incident unfolded in the early hours of Wednesday, when a sudden surge of devotees jostled for space to take a holy dip at the Sangam, the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and mythical Saraswati rivers.

Key Details of the Tragedy:

  1. Crowd Surge: The ill-fated stampede occurred between 2:00 and 2:30 AM, as pilgrims, having gathered at the Sangam since the evening before, rushed to take the holy dip during the highly auspicious ‘Amrit snan’. As the crowd reached its peak, the situation became unmanageable.
  2. Stampede Triggered by Overcrowding: Eyewitnesses reported that the incident was triggered when the surge of devotees broke through barricades, crushing those who were already at the site. Many pilgrims had been waiting for hours to participate in the early morning ritual.
  3. Casualty Figures: In the aftermath of the stampede, 30 deaths were confirmed, with at least 60 people sustaining injuries. Over 90 individuals were rushed to nearby hospitals, with the death toll expected to rise. Among the deceased, 25 have been identified, including pilgrims from Karnataka, Assam, and Gujarat.
  4. Government Response: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his condolences and announced the formation of a three-member judicial commission to investigate the cause of the stampede. The commission will include Justice Harsh Kumar, former DG VK Gupta, and retired IAS officer VK Singh. An ex-gratia payment of ₹25 lakh has been promised to the families of the deceased.
  5. Maha Kumbh Attendance: Despite the tragedy, over 7.5 crore pilgrims participated in the holy dip during Mauni Amavasya. The overwhelming turnout has brought both a spiritual and logistical challenge, as authorities scramble to manage the influx of devotees.
  6. Security Measures and Ongoing Investigation: Barricades and crowd control measures were reportedly breached under the pressure of the massive crowd. Authorities have confirmed that investigations are underway to determine whether safety protocols were sufficient. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also extended his condolences to the victims’ families, calling the incident “extremely saddening.”
  7. Continued Religious Rituals: Following the stampede, the Amrit snan, which had been delayed due to the tragedy, resumed in the afternoon. While the Sangam remained crowded, officials made efforts to ensure a safer environment for the continuing rituals.

This year’s Maha Kumbh, despite its spiritual significance and immense gathering, has now been marred by this devastating tragedy. With over 7.5 crore people participating, the incident has raised concerns about crowd management and safety measures, as the authorities now face the daunting task of investigating the cause behind this disaster.
