A recent viral image detailing a staggering admission fee of ₹55,600 for nursery students has ignited intense debate and criticism regarding the rising cost of education in India. The breakdown of the fees reveals an additional ₹8,400 one-time parent orientation charge, contributing to the growing financial burden faced by parents, particularly in metropolitan areas.
The issue was brought to light by Dr. Jagdish Chaturvedi, an ENT surgeon, who shared the fee structure on social media platform X. In his post, he expressed disbelief at the exorbitant charges, questioning why parents would agree to such fees for an educational institution when they would hesitate to pay a fraction of that amount for a medical consultation. “8400 INR parent orientation fee!!! No parent will ever agree to pay even 20% of this for a doctor consultation. I am planning to open a school now,” he wrote, resonating with many parents grappling with similar concerns.
As private schools, particularly those offering international curricula, target affluent families with their premium fees, middle-class and lower-income families are often left sacrificing other essential expenses to afford their children’s education. The viral notice has led to a wave of comments from parents expressing their frustrations. One user pointed out that such institutions thrive on a perceived social status, while another lamented the lack of affordable quality education, calling for a revolution in the education system.
Concerns about rising school fees are not isolated. Udit Bhandari, a real estate consultant in Gurugram, recently shared his own struggles with his son’s expensive school fees, which he noted increase by 10% annually. His son, currently in Grade 3 at a reputable CBSE school, faces a monthly fee of ₹30,000, which could escalate to approximately ₹9,00,000 per annum by the time he reaches Class 12 if the trend continues.
As the cost of education continues to rise, many parents are calling for change and seeking solutions that provide quality education at a more reasonable price, highlighting the urgent need for reform in the educational landscape.
