Tensions flared in Uttarakhand’s Haldwani as clashes broke out between authorities and a mob during the demolition of an illegal madrasa, resulting in over 50 policemen sustaining injuries. The situation escalated when protesters hurled stones at law enforcement officials, prompting the deployment of shoot-at-sight orders to quell the unrest.
The incident unfolded as a team of administration and civic officials, accompanied by police personnel, moved to dismantle the unauthorized structure, which also housed an adjacent mosque. However, their efforts were met with fierce resistance from a crowd of “unruly elements” who engaged in violent confrontations with the authorities.
As the clashes intensified, vehicles parked outside the police station were set ablaze, adding to the chaos gripping the area. Prohibitory orders prohibiting large gatherings were swiftly implemented, and shoot-at-sight directives were issued to maintain law and order.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami affirmed that the demolition operation was carried out in compliance with a court order, emphasizing the need to restore peace and order in the affected region. Additional police and central forces were mobilized to contain the situation, with strict measures promised against those responsible for instigating violence and encroaching on public property.
Municipal Commissioner Pankaj Upadhyay declared the madrasa and prayer site as entirely illegal, highlighting previous actions taken by the Municipal Corporation to seal off the unauthorized structures. He vowed to identify and apprehend the individuals involved in the unrest.
In response to the escalating crisis, the Chief Minister convened a high-level meeting with senior officials to strategize on restoring normalcy and ensuring the safety of residents in the aftermath of the violent clashes.
The incident underscores the challenges faced by authorities in dealing with illegal constructions and the imperative of upholding the rule of law while addressing communal tensions.
