A cobbler in Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh, is experiencing newfound fame and attention following a surprise visit from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. Ram Chet, who runs a makeshift shop repairing and polishing shoes, has become the talk of the town after Gandhi stopped by to mend a pair of sandals during a visit to the area.

The incident occurred when Rahul Gandhi was in Sultanpur for a court hearing related to a defamation case. During a brief stop at Ram Chet’s roadside shop, Gandhi engaged with the cobbler, trying his hand at mending shoes. The visuals of Gandhi stitching sandals quickly went viral, bringing unprecedented attention to Chet’s humble business.

In recognition of the cobbler’s work, Gandhi later gifted him a sewing machine, which will significantly ease his task of repairing footwear. The gesture has had a profound impact on Ram Chet’s life. He reports a significant increase in visitors to his shop, with people coming to take selfies, greet him, and even inquire about his well-being.

The fame has also brought an influx of financial offers for the footwear Gandhi worked on. Ram Chet has received offers as high as ₹10 lakh for the sandals, with one caller offering a bag full of cash. Despite the tempting offers, Chet has refused to sell the sandals, stating that he values the sentimental connection more than the money. “Rahul Gandhi is my partner. We run the shop in partnership,” he humorously told reporters.

Chet’s life has transformed not only in terms of public recognition but also in the attention he is receiving from officials. Since the viral images of his interaction with Gandhi circulated, local administration officials have visited Chet’s makeshift hut to inquire about his living conditions and provide assistance. His accommodation, which lacks electricity, poses a challenge for using the new sewing machine. Chet plans to use the machine at his son’s home, which has power.

The cobbler’s son, Raghuram, expressed his gratitude towards Gandhi, recalling that the Congress leader treated them with dignity and respect. Raghuram shared that he had left the cobbling profession due to a lack of respect, but the recent events have revived his family’s faith in their traditional craft.

The attention from Gandhi and the subsequent media coverage have not only elevated Ram Chet’s status in his community but have also highlighted the broader social issues faced by those in traditional and low-profile professions.
