The Supreme Court has intervened in the suspension case of AAP MP Raghav Chadha, suggesting that an apology to the Rajya Sabha chairman might be the way forward. The court has advised the chairman to consider the apology sympathetically.
In its ruling, the Supreme Court noted that both parties had proposed a potential solution during the hearing. The petitioner, Raghav Chadha, expressed his willingness to seek an appointment and offer an apology on record, which would be viewed with sympathy by the Rajya Sabha Chairman.
Raghav Chadha faced suspension from the Rajya Sabha on August 1, following allegations of a “breach of privilege.” Four MPs had accused him of violating rules by mentioning their names in a House panel without their consent. The Upper House of Parliament passed a resolution for Chadha’s suspension, pending the submission of findings by the privileges committee.
Chadha’s suspension marked the second time an AAP MP had been suspended from the Rajya Sabha during Parliament’s Monsoon session. Earlier, senior AAP leader Sanjay Singh had been suspended on July 24. Singh was subsequently arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on October 4 in connection with the Delhi liquor policy case.
During the recent hearing, Raghav Chadha’s legal counsel informed the court that the AAP leader was prepared to meet the Rajya Sabha chairman and personally offer his apology. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Centre, also concurred that an apology from Chadha would be a more favorable resolution to the matter.
Both parties involved in the case have been instructed to update the Supreme Court on the progress of the situation on November 20. This development represents a potential step towards resolving the suspension issue and reinstating Chadha in the Rajya Sabha.
