Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is set for a resounding victory in Uttar Pradesh’s Rae Bareli constituency, with a staggering winning margin of over 3 lakh votes against his nearest rival, Dinesh Pratap Singh of the BJP, according to Election Commission data. This victory marks the highest winning margin in Uttar Pradesh during the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.
Rahul Gandhi’s lead in Rae Bareli highlights the continued support and strong electoral performance of the Congress party in this region. The constituency, previously represented by Sonia Gandhi since 2004, has remained a stronghold for the Congress.
Sonia Gandhi, after opting out of the Lok Sabha elections 2024 and moving to the Rajya Sabha, paved the way for Rahul Gandhi to contest from Rae Bareli. In the 2019 elections, Sonia Gandhi won by a margin of 1.67 lakh votes against Dinesh Pratap Singh.
Rahul Gandhi, who had represented the Amethi Lok Sabha seat from 2004 to 2019, faced a setback in the last elections when he lost to BJP’s Smriti Irani. However, he secured a second seat in Kerala and retained his MP status. In the current elections, Rahul Gandhi is contesting from Rae Bareli (Uttar Pradesh) and Wayanad (Kerala), leading in both constituencies.
In Wayanad, Rahul Gandhi is ahead of his closest rival, Annie Raja of the CPM, by over 3 lakh votes. The Congress party is also optimistic about regaining its Amethi seat, with Smriti Irani trailing Congress candidate Kishori Lal by over 90,000 votes.
The ongoing election results show the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) leading in 291 seats compared to the opposition INDIA bloc’s 233 seats. Notable surprises in Uttar Pradesh include the Congress-Samajwadi Party alliance leading ahead of the BJP in several constituencies.
