Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced the ambitious goal of making three crore women in India “lakhpati didi” (millionaire sisters), highlighting the government’s commitment to women’s welfare. The announcement came during the virtual inauguration of the ‘Mahtari Vandan’ scheme in Chhattisgarh, aimed at providing financial assistance to women.

Under the scheme, the first installment of ₹655 crore was deposited into the bank accounts of beneficiaries, primarily married women, fulfilling the promise of providing ₹1,000 per month to over 70 lakh women. PM Modi emphasized the importance of empowering women, stating that when mothers and sisters are empowered, the entire family benefits.

The Prime Minister underscored various initiatives aimed at women’s welfare, including providing pucca houses in the name of women, distributing cooking gas cylinders at subsidized rates through the Ujjwala scheme, and promoting financial inclusion through Jan Dhan accounts and Mudra loans. He highlighted that over 50% of Jan Dhan accounts and more than 65% of Mudra loans were availed by women, showcasing their increasing economic empowerment.

PM Modi also noted the significant impact of government efforts, with more than one crore women already becoming “lakhpati didi” as a result. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to furthering this goal, aiming to elevate three crore women to millionaire status.

The announcement underscores the government’s focus on women’s empowerment and financial inclusion, reflecting a broader strategy to uplift women across the country. As the ‘Mahtari Vandan’ scheme is rolled out, it is expected to positively impact millions of women, contributing to their economic empowerment and overall well-being.
