Mumbai Faces Severe Flooding as Old Video of Gateway of India Surges Online

Residents of Mumbai woke up to another day of relentless rainfall, causing significant waterlogging and traffic disruptions across the city. The monsoon fury has resulted in a fresh wave of flooding, with old footage of the Gateway of India going viral on social media amid the current crisis.

The viral video, which has been widely shared on X, depicts powerful waves crashing against the Gateway of India, submerging the surrounding area under a deluge of water. The footage, though dated, has resonated with viewers due to the city’s ongoing struggle with intense rainfall and flooding. The video’s authenticity and the exact date of its capture remain unverified.

“Scary visuals, Mumbaikars, please stay safe,” one viewer commented, while another added, “Thinking of everyone affected by the floods in Mumbai. Stay safe and take all necessary precautions.”

The current monsoon has brought Mumbai to a standstill, with 135 mm of rainfall recorded in the last 24 hours. Areas such as Mulund and Malabar Hills experienced 34 mm of rainfall in just one hour this morning, leading to severe waterlogging and traffic jams.

In addition to the heavy rains, the city is bracing for a high tide of 4.59 meters expected around 1 pm today, which could worsen the flooding situation. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall with the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall in isolated areas.

To manage the crisis, three National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have been deployed to Mumbai to assist with rescue and relief operations. Authorities are urging residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel.
