Mpox Diagnosed in Patient Receiving Care in Malappuram, Kerala

Latest newsMpox Diagnosed in Patient Receiving Care in Malappuram, Kerala

A 38-year-old man from Malappuram, Kerala, has been confirmed to have Mpox, a viral illness related to smallpox, according to health officials. The patient, who had recently returned from Dubai, was admitted to the Government Medical College Hospital in Malappuram after showing symptoms of the disease. Samples from the patient were tested, and the results confirmed the Mpox infection on Wednesday.

The man had initially been isolated at home upon his return and had taken precautionary measures, as stated by Kerala Health Minister Veena George. After falling ill, he was first admitted to a private hospital before being transferred to Manjeri Medical College. Suspecting Mpox, his samples were sent to Kozhikode Medical College for testing.

Mpox, characterized by skin rashes, fever, and flu-like symptoms, spreads through close skin-to-skin contact. While it can be self-limiting, it can be severe or fatal in some cases. Kerala has been on high alert for Mpox since August, following the World Health Organization’s declaration of a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. The state had previously reported Mpox cases in 2022.
