The Kashmir Valley faced significant disruptions on Friday as heavy snowfall and continuous rainfall blanketed the region, leading to the cancellation of all flights to and from Srinagar International Airport. Officials cited poor visibility and persistent snowfall as reasons for grounding air traffic.
However, train services to the valley resumed in the afternoon after railway staff successfully cleared snow from the tracks, providing some relief to stranded passengers.
Highway Closures and Stranded Vehicles
The Srinagar-Jammu National Highway also remained closed as hundreds of vehicles were stranded between the Pir Panjal Tunnel and Srinagar. Local authorities and police personnel worked tirelessly to clear the highway, assist stranded travelers, and address their immediate needs, including food and water.
Senior officials, including the district magistrates of Kulgam and Anantnag, along with SSPs and police teams, were on-site throughout the day, supervising relief and restoration efforts.
Restoration Measures
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah held meetings with senior officials to ensure rapid restoration of essential services, including electricity and road connectivity. The administration deployed snow clearance machines across districts to restore major roads and ensure connectivity between towns and district headquarters.
Medical facilities were placed on high alert to handle emergencies caused by the snowfall. Authorities emphasized preparedness for any potential crises.
Snowfall Brings Mixed Reactions
Despite the disruptions, the heavy snowfall brought relief to the region, which had been grappling with a four-month-long dry spell. The snowfall replenished water reservoirs vital for sustaining rivers, streams, and other water bodies during the summer months, a silver lining amid the challenges posed by the extreme weather.
As restoration efforts continue, authorities are focused on ensuring the safety and well-being of residents and travelers while addressing the aftermath of the heavy snowfall.
