The Karnataka government has taken proactive measures to combat the emerging threat of the JN.1 variant of Covid-19 by forming a specialized cabinet sub-committee. This sub-committee is set to collaborate closely with the existing Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) in an effort to efficiently manage and contain the spread of the new variant within the state.
The newly formed sub-committee comprises several cabinet ministers, including State Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao, Medical Education Minister Sharanprakash Rudrappa Patil, Social Welfare Minister HC Mahadevappa, and Higher Education Minister MC Sudhakar. Their collective efforts are aimed at bolstering Karnataka’s response to the evolving Covid-19 scenario.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah emphasized the importance of remaining calm while taking necessary precautions to mitigate the risk of infection. He assured the public that although 92 cases of the JN.1 variant have been detected in Karnataka, a significant majority—72 patients—are under home quarantine. Out of the hospitalized cases, only seven are in the ICU, and the Chief Minister clarified that three deaths were not solely due to COVID but involved other contributing factors.
In line with precautionary measures, the Karnataka government has issued advisories urging individuals aged 60 and above, individuals with underlying health conditions (specifically kidney, heart, and liver ailments), pregnant women, and lactating mothers to wear masks outdoors. Additionally, they are strongly advised against visiting enclosed or congested spaces for their safety.
Addressing specific areas of concern, districts bordering Kerala and Tamil Nadu have received special circulars, directing authorities to heighten vigilance, conduct ample testing, and promptly report any detected Covid-19 cases.
The health department is gearing up to ramp up testing efforts by increasing the number of sample tests. Recognizing the urgency, Karnataka’s health minister highlighted plans to expedite the procurement of testing kits on an emergency basis. District health officials have been instructed to expedite the procurement process to commence testing promptly.
These strategic measures and swift actions by the Karnataka government underscore their commitment to proactive management of the JN.1 variant threat, emphasizing public health and safety as paramount priorities in the battle against the evolving Covid-19 landscape.
