In a devastating turn of events, a fourth-year engineering student at the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (IIT-G), passed away on Monday morning after falling ill following a New Year’s Eve celebration. The student, along with three friends, also students at IIT-G, had ventured to Guwahati’s Paltan Bazar to ring in the new year.

The night took a grim turn when the student began feeling unwell, prompting the group to seek refuge in a hotel. Subsequently, her condition deteriorated, and her friends rushed her to Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) as she experienced severe breathing difficulties. Tragically, doctors pronounced her brought dead upon arrival.

Authorities reported that the deceased had earlier complained of breathing problems during the celebration. The Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) for Central Police District, Amitabh Basumatary, confirmed that the body has been sent for an autopsy to ascertain the cause of death. Basumatary revealed that despite efforts to inform the student’s family in Telangana about the tragedy, they declined to file a complaint. Consequently, the police have initiated an investigation based on their own initiative.

Expressing deep condolences, IIT-Guwahati issued a statement acknowledging the unfortunate demise of the student outside the campus on December 31, 2023. The institution affirmed that the police are actively probing the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The somber incident has cast a pall over the campus, prompting mourning and concern among students and faculty alike. As investigations continue, the entire community remains deeply saddened by the untimely loss of a promising student.
