Power Cuts in Delhi Amid Heatwave and Water Crisis After "National Grid Failure"

Delhi faced widespread power cuts in several areas following a major incident at a power grid in Uttar Pradesh’s Mandola, which supplies 1,500 megawatts of electricity to the national capital. The incident occurred amidst Delhi grappling with an intense heatwave and a severe water crisis, adding to the challenges faced by residents.

The power grid failure, reported by Delhi Power Minister Atishi, resulted in disruptions across various parts of the city, with temperatures soaring around 42 degrees Celsius. Atishi highlighted the urgency of the situation, mentioning efforts to connect to alternative power sources to mitigate the impact of the grid failure.

In response to the crisis, Atishi expressed intentions to meet with the new Union Power Minister to address the national-level implications of the power infrastructure failure. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader criticized the central government, citing concerns over the failure of the national grid in the country’s capital and emphasizing the need for robust infrastructure to handle peak power demands.

The power cuts add to the existing tensions between AAP and the Centre-appointed Lt Governor of Delhi, VK Saxena, particularly in light of recent clashes over the acute water crisis. Social media platforms were flooded with complaints from residents experiencing the power outages, highlighting the challenges faced during the peak summer season.

The situation in Delhi is compounded by an unprecedented heatwave, with temperatures exceeding 50 degrees Celsius on some days. The India Meteorological Department has warned of continued heatwave conditions in most parts of the city, further exacerbating the discomfort and challenges for residents.

As authorities work to restore power and address the infrastructure issues, residents are urged to take necessary precautions and conserve energy during this challenging period of power shortages and extreme weather conditions.
