Delhi Hit-and-Run Incident: Speeding Mercedes Claims Life of Cycle Rider

A tragic hit-and-run incident occurred in Delhi’s Ashram area on Saturday, resulting in the death of a cycle rider after being struck by a speeding Mercedes. The victim, identified as Rajesh, was killed instantly when the car collided with him from behind and then fled the scene.

According to Delhi police, Rajesh’s body was discovered on the roadside, while his bicycle was found approximately 150 meters away from the impact site. The car, which had been speeding, was later traced, and its driver, Pradeep Gautam, surrendered at a local police station later in the evening. The vehicle had been given to Gautam by the owner a month prior for sale, police reported.

The incident occurred as Rajesh was en route to his duty. His uncle, Habi Prasad, recounted the harrowing details, stating, “The Mercedes driver hit him from behind and dragged him 7-8 meters. Rajesh died instantly. The cycle was dragged at least 100-150 meters.”

This case adds to a disturbing trend of fatal hit-and-run incidents involving luxury vehicles across India. Earlier this year, a similar case occurred in Nagpur where a woman, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, drove a Mercedes and killed two men on a scooter. Other high-profile cases include the BMW Worli and Pune Porsche incidents, which involved luxury cars and resulted in severe consequences, including tampering with evidence and lengthy legal battles.

In a significant development, a case from 2016 where a speeding Mercedes was involved in a fatal accident in Delhi has recently been resolved. The court awarded ₹1.98 crore in compensation to the victim’s family after eight years of legal proceedings.
