The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) conducted extensive raids on Friday at the residence and market owned by suspended Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Sheikh Shahjahan in Sandeshkhali, North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. This development follows Shahjahan’s recent arrest and subsequent custody by the CBI in connection with multiple allegations including land grabbing, extortion, and sexual crimes against local women.
Around 20 CBI officials, accompanied by forensic experts, carried out an eight-hour-long search operation at Shahjahan’s properties. This action comes in the wake of mounting accusations from local residents regarding Shahjahan’s involvement in illegal activities over several years. Notably, Shahjahan was arrested by local police on February 28 after being accused of assaulting Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials who were investigating him in connection with a multi-crore public distribution system (PDS) case.
The CBI’s search revealed crucial evidence, including call records linking Shahjahan to key individuals, although his mobile handsets remain untraceable. It was disclosed that Shahjahan had received a call from TMC legislator Sukumar Mahata on the day of the assault on ED officials, a fact corroborated by Mahata himself.
The island village of Sandeshkhali has been embroiled in controversy since January 5, when ED officers were attacked during a raid on Shahjahan’s residence. Subsequently, violent protests erupted in the area, with locals alleging sexual harassment and land grabbing by Shahjahan and his associates. Despite claims of innocence, Shahjahan remains under investigation by both state and national agencies.
Amidst the ongoing political turmoil surrounding Shahjahan’s case, opposition parties have seized upon the situation as a critique of the TMC’s governance and law enforcement in West Bengal. The involvement of national commissions and ongoing investigations underscore the gravity of the allegations against Shahjahan and his associates.
While Shahjahan professes his innocence, maintaining that the charges against him are baseless, the CBI’s raids and subsequent investigation suggest a deepening legal quagmire for the embattled TMC leader. As the case unfolds, it remains to be seen how the political landscape in West Bengal will be affected by these developments.
