The Jammu and Kashmir Police have apprehended Arjun Sharma for his alleged involvement in the vandalism of a temple located in Nagrota, Jammu. According to police reports on Sunday, Sharma confessed to attempting to set fire to the temple and vandalizing its sanctum sanctorum, driven by suspicions of ‘black magic’ being practiced there.
This incident marks the second case of temple desecration in the region, sparking concerns over potential disruptions to communal harmony and peace in the Union Territory. Authorities clarified that the act was motivated by personal animosity and Sharma’s belief in the alleged practice of black magic at the temple, ruling out any political angle.
“We have arrested the main accused, Arjun Sharma. He has confessed to having vandalized the temple,” stated Brijesh Kumar, Superintendent of Police, Jammu (Rural). Kumar emphasized the timely arrest’s significance in preventing any escalation of tensions in the area.
Previously, another temple in Reasi district had suffered similar vandalism, prompting widespread protests and calls for stringent actions against those responsible. Although over 50 individuals were questioned in connection with the Reasi incident, no arrests have been made so far.
The Congress party has criticized the Jammu and Kashmir administration and the BJP, accusing them of failing to protect temples and urging for an independent judicial inquiry to uncover any conspiracy aimed at disturbing regional peace and harmony.
“A Hanuman temple has been vandalized in Nagrota a week after the Shiv temple at Reasi. Stern punishment for culprits and an independent judicial inquiry is needed to expose the conspiracy to disturb peace and harmony,” remarked a Congress spokesperson.
