India Prepares Grand Welcome for Maldives President Amid Strained Ties

As Prime Minister Narendra Modi gears up to take the oath for a record third term, India is making elaborate arrangements for a grand welcome to all South Asian leaders attending the ceremony. Among them is Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu, marking his first official visit to India since assuming office in November last year.

The relations between India and Maldives have faced challenges under Muizzu’s presidency, with tensions escalating following his criticism of Indian military presence and calls for their complete withdrawal. Despite this, India extended an olive branch by inviting him to the swearing-in ceremony, signaling a desire to mend ties and foster positive relations.

Expressing his gratitude for the invitation, President Muizzu acknowledged the importance of strengthening the close relations between Maldives and India. He highlighted the positive direction of Maldives-India relations and expressed readiness to work with Prime Minister Modi towards further cooperation.

Muizzu’s visit comes amidst a backdrop of geopolitical dynamics, especially with China’s growing influence in the region. Unlike his predecessors, Muizzu’s initial diplomatic engagements included visits to Turkey and China, reflecting a shift in priorities.

The upcoming swearing-in ceremony is expected to showcase India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy, with leaders from Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Nepal, Mauritius, Seychelles, and Maldives in attendance. Posters featuring PM Modi alongside other Asian leaders have been displayed across Delhi, symbolizing the spirit of regional cooperation and diplomatic engagement.
