IPS Vivek Sahay Appointed New West Bengal DGP After EC Suspends Rajeev Kumar

In a significant development, IPS officer Vivek Sahay has been appointed as the new Director General of Police (DGP) for West Bengal, taking over from Rajeev Kumar, who was removed from the position by the Election Commission. The swift appointment of Sahay comes as part of the Election Commission’s efforts to ensure a level playing field and integrity in the electoral process, particularly with the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

The official announcement of Vivek Sahay’s appointment was made on Monday by the chief secretary of West Bengal, following the Election Commission’s directive to provide a list of three eligible officers for Kumar’s replacement. Sahay, a 1988 batch IPS officer of the West Bengal cadre, brings a wealth of experience to the role, having served previously as the Director General (DG), Provisioning, and the Director General of Home Guards in the state.

Notably, Vivek Sahay was in charge of providing security to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee until his suspension by the Election Commission in March 2021. The suspension came in the aftermath of an attack on the CM that resulted in severe leg injuries. However, Sahay was later reinstated to the post of Director of Security before being appointed as the DGP.

The Election Commission’s decision to remove Rajeev Kumar as the state DGP aligns with its broader strategy to enforce fairness and transparency in the electoral process. This move is part of a larger-scale initiative by the commission, which also included the removal of home secretaries in six states – Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.

Additionally, Brihanmumbai municipal commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal, along with several additional commissioners and deputy commissioners, were also ordered to be removed by the Election Commission. Furthermore, secretaries of the general administrative departments in Mizoram and Himachal Pradesh were part of the wave of transfers initiated by the commission.

The appointment of Vivek Sahay as the new DGP of West Bengal signals a pivotal moment in the state’s law enforcement leadership amid the ongoing electoral dynamics. The Election Commission’s proactive measures to maintain the integrity of governance and electoral processes underscore the importance of fair and impartial administration, particularly during critical political junctures.
