A sub-inspector of the Delhi Police has been suspended following a widely circulated video clip depicting him kicking worshippers during Friday prayers on a street in north Delhi’s Inderlok area. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) North, Manoj Kumar Meena, confirmed the suspension, highlighting that an investigation was promptly initiated upon learning of the incident.
The incident occurred near the Inderlok metro station during the afternoon prayers, according to police reports. Mohammad Saifullah, a witness to the incident, recounted that the altercation unfolded shortly after the namaz commenced, with a group of policemen allegedly using profanities towards worshippers while their supervisory officer resorted to physical force to clear the street.
“Filthy words” were reportedly hurled at the worshippers for obstructing the road during Friday prayers, leading to an abrupt disruption of their religious observance, Saifullah stated. Mohammad Mustafa echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing that the worshippers responded with peaceful protest until senior police officials and the local peace committee intervened to address the situation.
DCP Manoj Kumar Meena assured that swift action has been taken, with the police post in-charge depicted in the video suspended immediately. Additionally, disciplinary measures are being pursued against the implicated officer. Meena emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and harmony in the community, noting that people from diverse backgrounds have appealed to one another to uphold these values.
In an appeal to the public, DCP Meena urged patience and emphasized the need to refrain from vigilantism. He stressed that isolated incidents cannot serve as precedents for individual actions, urging citizens to trust in the judicial process rather than resorting to self-administered justice.
