In a shocking turn of events, a passenger aboard an IndiGo flight from Delhi to Goa physically assaulted the aircraft’s co-captain while he was addressing passengers about delays on Sunday. The incident has sparked concerns about the airline’s management and the treatment of passengers during prolonged delays.
Sanal Vij, a co-passenger on the Delhi-Goa IndiGo flight, took to social media to share his first-hand account of the incident. Despite clarifying that he does not endorse violence, Vij highlighted IndiGo’s alleged mismanagement and mistakes that, he claimed, were overshadowed by the passenger’s actions.
Flight 6E2175, scheduled for a 7:40 AM departure, faced multiple delays and eventually took off at 05:35 PM. Vij detailed the prolonged boarding process, where 186 passengers, including infants and elderly individuals, experienced significant delays. Ground staff attributed the delay to air traffic control (ATC) issues.
According to Vij, the crewmembers were observed being unprofessional, engaging in lengthy conversations while disregarding requests from passengers, including elderly individuals seeking water. The situation escalated when a crew member arrived late, leading to verbal altercations with passengers.
The assault occurred around 3:20 PM when the assistant captain addressed passengers about the delay. The incident, captured on video, showed a passenger, identified as Sahil Kataria, charging at the co-captain, Anup Kumar, and verbally abusing him. Kataria was later arrested and released on bail.
IndiGo released an official statement, declaring the passenger as “unruly” and stating that the incident would be referred to an independent internal committee. The airline is considering including the passenger in the no-fly list, emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy towards unacceptable behavior.
Sanal Vij questioned IndiGo’s handling of the situation, calling for authorities to investigate the airline’s alleged mismanagement and unprofessional conduct. The incident has ignited discussions about passenger treatment during flight delays and the responsibility of airlines to ensure the safety and well-being of passengers and crew. Authorities are expected to examine the incident closely to prevent such occurrences in the future.
