India’s battle against Covid-19 has seen a new challenge emerge with the detection of 619 cases of the JN.1 sub-variant reported across 12 states, as per official sources. This comes as the country registered 761 new Covid cases on Friday, marking a decrease in active cases to 4,334, along with 12 reported deaths.

The breakdown of JN.1 cases reveals significant numbers in Karnataka, Kerala, and Maharashtra, with 199, 148, and 110 cases respectively. Additional instances have been reported in states like Goa, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Rajasthan, Telangana, Odisha, and Haryana.

While the daily Covid case count has significantly reduced from the peaks seen in early 2020, the nation has witnessed over 4.5 crore infections and more than 5.3 lakh deaths. The positive aspect remains the recovery rate, standing at 98.81%, with over 4.4 crore recoveries. Vaccination efforts continue to make strides, with 220.67 crore Covid-19 vaccine doses administered across the country.

The JN.1 sub-variant has been labeled a “variant of interest” by the World Health Organization due to its rapid transmission rate. Previously part of the BA.2.86 sub-lineages, it has now garnered specific attention for its distinct traits.

State-wise, Kerala, Karnataka, and Maharashtra lead in active Covid cases, with Kerala topping the list at 1,249, closely followed by Karnataka and Maharashtra at 1,240 and 914 active cases respectively. Tamil Nadu, Chhattisgarh, and Andhra Pradesh also maintain active case counts.

Officials in Maharashtra and Odisha have confirmed cases of the JN.1 sub-variant within their states. Maharashtra’s vigilance includes directing health departments to take necessary precautions, while Odisha’s authorities assure the public about managing the situation despite the emergence of new variants.

Karnataka witnessed a rise in new Covid cases to 298, along with an increased positivity rate. With four virus-related deaths, the state remains vigilant against the evolving situation.

As India navigates this new phase of the pandemic, states are adopting measures to address the emergence of the JN.1 sub-variant while emphasizing the need for caution and preventive strategies to combat its spread.
