Over the weekend, a troubling incident unfolded as a section of the Gurugram-Sohna elevated flyover succumbed to a road cave-in, triggering attention and concerns among commuters and authorities. The collapse, captured in viral videos on social media, revealed a pothole approximately five feet deep and two feet wide, emerging in front of SD Adarsh Vidyalaya.

Officials attributed the cave-in to issues related to a sewer line meant for road water drainage. Prompt action ensued as teams from the police and the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) swiftly arrived at the site, cordoning off the affected area with barricades. Consequently, two lanes leading from Gurugram to Sohna were temporarily closed, leading to traffic disruptions for several hours.

“The maintenance company will undertake repairs for the damaged road,” affirmed Traffic inspector Rajesh Kumar, addressing the situation.

This incident rekindled memories of a similar occurrence in August 2020 when a segment of the road collapsed during construction, prompting a suspension of work for a period.

Responding to the recent cave-in, Haryana’s Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala labeled it a “natural phenomenon,” deflecting responsibility to the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) for further elucidation.

Chautala defended the government’s track record, highlighting past inquiries into similar cases and emphasizing the allocation of substantial funds, citing the ‘PM Gramin Sadak’ scheme focusing on rural connectivity, as indicators of the state’s commitment to infrastructural development.

Meanwhile, in an unrelated incident, the collapse of a temple wall in Gurugram trapped five workers. Rescue efforts were underway as authorities diligently worked to extricate the trapped individuals from the rubble.

The twin incidents underscored concerns over infrastructure safety and maintenance, prompting renewed discussions on accountability and the need for robust inspection and upkeep protocols. As investigations and rescue operations continue, the focus remains on ensuring the safety of infrastructure and the well-being of those affected by these incidents in Gurugram.
