Telangana DGP Anjani Kumar's Suspension Revoked Over Meeting Amid Election Counting

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has reinstated Telangana Director General of Police (DGP) Anjani Kumar, overturning his earlier suspension for an alleged breach of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC). The suspension stemmed from Kumar’s visit to Congress leader Revanth Reddy, now the Chief Minister, during the state assembly election counting this month.

The controversy erupted when Kumar was spotted at Reddy’s residence during the vote counting process, capturing the moment where Kumar presented a bouquet to Reddy. This encounter sparked widespread debate on social media, raising concerns about potential violations of the MCC.

Accompanying Kumar were state police officers Sanjay Kumar Jain and Mahesh M Bhagwat. The selective meeting with one specific candidate among the thousands contesting in the elections, particularly one from a specific party among many, prompted suspicions of favoritism and triggered questions about the DGP’s impartiality, a key requirement during elections as per the MCC.

The Election Commission viewed this meeting as a clear violation of the code, emphasizing the significance of officials maintaining neutrality and impartiality during electoral processes. They highlighted concerns about the potential influence of such actions on junior officers and the perceived lack of neutrality from a high-ranking official.

Anjani Kumar’s suspension led to the assignment of additional responsibilities to senior IPS officer Ravi Gupta, who took charge as the acting Telangana DGP during Kumar’s suspension period.

The ECI’s decision to revoke Kumar’s suspension signifies the end of the disciplinary action against him for the encounter with Revanth Reddy amid the election counting. However, this incident serves as a reminder of the stringent expectations placed on officials regarding their conduct and impartiality during crucial electoral proceedings.
