Over Six Killed as Strong Winds Uproot Tree in Himachal Pradesh's Kullu

A powerful storm in Himachal Pradesh’s Kullu district led to the uprooting of a massive tree near Manikaran Gurdwara on Sunday evening, killing over six people and injuring several others. The tree, brought down by strong winds and a landslide, fell on parked vehicles and nearby food stalls, trapping people underneath.

Eyewitnesses described the chaotic scene as the tree collapsed onto a row of cars and roadside stalls. A viral video from the incident shows a devastated onlooker crying out, “Maa” (mom) and “chale gaye, chale gaye” (they are gone, they are gone), as he stood next to a crushed vehicle. Another clip captures a man assisting a woman with visible blood stains on her shirt.

Rescue and relief operations are currently underway, with teams working to clear the debris and assist the injured. Authorities have transported the victims to nearby hospitals for urgent medical care.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier issued a yellow warning for thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (40-50 kmph) in several districts, including Kullu, Chamba, Kangra, and Mandi. The warning was issued on Thursday, cautioning residents and tourists about adverse weather conditions.

Manikaran, a popular tourist destination situated at an altitude of 1,829 meters and about 40 km from Kullu, is frequented by devotees and travelers visiting the famous Sikh shrine and hot springs in the area.

Officials have urged residents and visitors to remain cautious amid ongoing weather disturbances in the region. Further updates on casualties and rescue efforts are awaited.
