Earthquake of 2.8 Magnitude Strikes Ghaziabad; Delhi-NCR on Alert

Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, experienced a mild earthquake of magnitude 2.8 on Sunday at 3:24 PM, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The tremor occurred at a depth of 10 km, though no damage or casualties have been reported.

This comes just days after Delhi was shaken by a magnitude 4.0 earthquake early on Monday morning. The epicenter of that tremor was Dhaula Kuan in southwest Delhi, and its shallow depth of 5 km caused strong shaking across the National Capital Region (NCR), prompting panic among residents.

Following the Delhi earthquake, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged citizens to stay calm and vigilant. He advised people to follow safety precautions and remain alert for possible aftershocks, while also assuring that authorities were monitoring the situation closely.

Delhi is categorized as Seismic Zone IV in India’s seismic zoning map, indicating a high risk of earthquakes. The city, located 250 km from the active Himalayan collision zone, frequently experiences tremors from both near and far-field seismic activity.

Authorities have reminded residents to stay prepared, follow earthquake safety guidelines, and remain cautious about potential aftershocks.
