A daring burglary at a prominent businessman’s residence in Kannur, Kerala, resulted in the loss of ₹1 crore in cash and 300 sovereigns of gold. The family, who had been attending a marriage ceremony in Tamil Nadu since November 19, discovered the crime upon their return on Sunday.

The burglars reportedly exploited the family’s absence, breaking into the home by gas-cutting the iron grill of the kitchen window. Surveillance footage revealed three individuals scaling the compound wall to enter the premises. Police suspect the valuables were taken from a locked cupboard, with the key left in a separate room.

The incident has sparked widespread concern, prompting the Kerala police to deploy forensic teams to collect fingerprints and evidence from the scene. Authorities have launched an intensive search to apprehend the culprits.

Rising Burglary Cases in Kerala

This robbery highlights an alarming rise in burglary cases across Kerala. A report by The Times of India reveals that the number of reported burglaries has increased from 192 in 2021 to 519 in 2023. Despite 1,325 arrests, the recovery of stolen gold remains a persistent challenge for law enforcement.

Among the suspected perpetrators are organized crime groups from neighboring states. One such gang, known as the “Kuruva gang” from Tamil Nadu, is infamous for its sophisticated burglary methods. Members reportedly scout homes, often posing as scrap collectors or vendors, and target households perceived to be vulnerable. They use distractions to lure residents out before breaking in, typically through kitchen doors, to loot valuables.

Police Investigation Underway

Kannur police are investigating the incident, while efforts to trace and apprehend the burglars continue. Forensic evidence and CCTV footage are expected to play a critical role in identifying the accused.

The surge in burglary cases has prompted calls for tighter security measures and enhanced vigilance, particularly in neighborhoods vulnerable to organized crime groups.
