A concert by popular actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh in Pune’s Kothrud area has hit a roadblock after the Maharashtra excise department revoked the permit to serve alcohol at the event. The decision follows objections raised by several individuals, including newly elected BJP MLA Chandrakant Patil, who criticized the plans to serve liquor at the program.
The concert, scheduled to take place later in the evening at Kakade Farm in Kothrud, was expected to attract a large crowd. However, the controversy erupted after concerns were raised over the event’s impact on local culture and public order.
In a statement, State Excise Commissioner C Rajput confirmed the revocation of the permit, saying, “The state excise department has cancelled the permission to serve liquor during the programme.” The cancellation came after objections from local residents and political figures, including Patil, who expressed concerns about the event’s implications for the area.
Chandrakant Patil, in a statement to the media, strongly opposed the concert, citing potential disturbances to local residents. “Such shows are not part of the city’s culture. This will create a major disturbance for residents of the area. The event will also cause traffic jams. Hence, I have urged the city police commissioner to cancel the programme,” said Patil.
The cancellation of the alcohol permit has sparked debate in Pune, with some supporting the decision, citing concerns over public order, while others believe it will affect the success of the concert. Organizers are yet to comment on the excise department’s decision and how it will impact the event.
Diljit Dosanjh, known for his energetic performances and massive fan following, has not made any public remarks on the issue yet. Fans of the singer, many of whom had been eagerly anticipating the show, expressed their disappointment on social media, voicing hopes that the event would proceed without further disruptions.
The controversy has also highlighted the ongoing debate over public events, alcohol consumption, and local regulations in Maharashtra, with political leaders and residents continuing to voice their concerns.
