One Dead, Five Trapped in Bengaluru Building Collapse Amid Heavy Rains

Bengaluru faced a tragic incident on Tuesday as an under-construction building in Babusapalya collapsed, resulting in one fatality and five individuals reportedly trapped beneath the debris. The collapse occurred during a period of heavy rainfall that has been affecting the city since last week.

Rescue teams quickly arrived at the scene and have made significant efforts to clear the rubble and reach those trapped inside. So far, three individuals have been rescued, while the search continues for the remaining victims.

The ongoing rain has caused widespread disruption across Bengaluru, leading to severe waterlogging that has impacted daily life. Many children have missed school, and numerous passengers have been unable to reach their flights and trains. In a particularly alarming response to the flooding, residents of an apartment complex in Yelahanka on the outskirts of the city were evacuated using boats.

Karnataka’s Deputy Chief Minister, DK Shivakumar, who oversees Bengaluru’s development, addressed the situation, stating that the government is doing everything possible to mitigate the impact of the adverse weather. “We cannot stop nature,” he remarked, referencing similar situations in other parts of the country, including pollution in Delhi and unexpected rains in drought-prone regions like Dubai. He assured the public that all necessary measures are being taken to assist affected residents.

Shivakumar confirmed that pumps have been deployed to drain water from inundated apartments and low-lying areas, and teams from both state and national disaster response forces are actively conducting relief operations.
