Instagram influencer Sugandh Sharma has ignited controversy after a video she posted claimed that North Indians are essential to Bengaluru’s identity and functionality. In the now-viral reel, Sharma suggested that the city would be left empty if North Indians were to leave, even asserting that paying guest accommodations would remain vacant without them.
The video, captioned “Bangalore sabka hain kisi ek ka nahin” (Bengaluru belongs to everyone, not to anyone alone), quickly drew widespread criticism. Celebrities and netizens alike voiced their disapproval of Sharma’s remarks, deeming them divisive and disrespectful.
Prominent figures such as actresses Chaithra Achar and Anupama Gowda, as well as Bigg Boss stars Rupesh Rajanna and Dhanraj, publicly condemned her statements. Achar responded sharply, stating, “If you can actually leave, just as an experiment, and see how Bangalore becomes empty, we are ready to live with that emptiness.” Gowda added, “You need Bengaluru more than anything else, and you leaving Bengaluru doesn’t make any difference.”
Common citizens also joined the chorus of criticism. One user expressed, “As a Kannadiga and a proud Bangalorean, we’ve never had any significant issues with our North Indian friends. It feels like some influencers have a personal agenda, pushing aggression towards Bangalore with divisive content.”
Following the backlash, Sharma posted a follow-up video clarifying her love for Bengaluru, referring to it as the “Silicon Valley of India.” In her response, she urged her audience to stop spreading hate and emphasized the importance of unity among the city’s diverse population.
