Four Counter-Terrorism Operations Underway in Kashmir After Pahalgam Attack

In the wake of the deadly terrorist attack at Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives, security forces have ramped up counter-terrorism operations across Kashmir, particularly in the southern districts. According to army sources, four counter-terror operations are underway today, as part of an intensified security crackdown aimed at dismantling terrorist networks operating in the region.

Two of these operations are continuations of earlier encounters, while the remaining two are focused on southern Kashmir, including a significant operation in the Yarwan forest area of Shopian district. The joint operations involve units from the Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police, working together to neutralize militant activity in the region.

In response to the recent escalation, the security presence in the districts of Shopian and Pulwama has been significantly strengthened. Officials stated that searches and combing operations are being carried out in densely forested and rural zones, where terrorists are believed to be hiding. Authorities have also increased vigilance around known militant strongholds in the southern parts of the valley.

As part of broader security measures, nearly 50 public parks and gardens in vulnerable areas have been shut down, with gates locked at 48 of the 87 identified sensitive sites. This move is designed to minimize the risk of attacks in public spaces. Additionally, several popular tourist destinations in Kashmir have been closed to the public, including Dooshpathri, Kokernag, Duksum, Sinthan Top, Acchabal, Bangus Valley, Margan Top, and Tosamaidan. These sites, which had been promoted as alternative tourist destinations in recent years, are now considered high-risk following the recent violence.

The decision to close public spaces and tourist locations comes exactly one week after the horrific terrorist attack in the Baisaran meadows near Pahalgam. On April 22, 2025, gunmen opened fire at tourists in the area, killing 26 people, most of whom were visitors from outside the region. The attack, which occurred during the spring season—a traditionally safer time for travel—shocked the nation and raised alarms over the safety of tourists in the region.

Following the attack, there has been increasing pressure on security forces to act swiftly in dismantling the terrorist networks operating in southern Kashmir. Intelligence suggests that militants are using the dense forests and rural areas of the region as hideouts, making it difficult for security forces to track and neutralize them.

As the security operations continue, authorities have vowed to maintain a strong presence throughout the region to prevent further attacks and ensure the safety of both residents and tourists in Kashmir. The government has also reiterated its commitment to restoring peace and security to the troubled region.

The ongoing counter-terrorism efforts highlight the continued volatility in Kashmir, where tensions have been high for years due to the presence of militant groups and ongoing insurgency. Security forces are under increasing pressure to bring stability to the region while ensuring the safety of civilians and visitors to the valley.
